A Photographic Documentary of Korea
July 4th to August 24th
Seoul Art Center

Magnum Photos is one of the most prestigious photographic cooperatives around today, and is soon to be showcasing its latest works at the Seoul Arts Center`s Hangaram Art Museum. The outsider’s viewpoint is evident when observing these images, and the photographers come across as the foreigners that they all are. The true merit of the expo is the way in which the artists have worked with their own perspectives on Korea to produce images unique to them alone. The organisers hope that visitors will learn something about Korea through looking at the country with different eyes. Magnum photographers Ian Berry, Thomas Hoepker and Bruno Barbey will be on hand during the exhibition to give lectures and talk about their work.

Chung Chu-ha’s Nuclear Menace
to 27th July
ARTsonje Center

Curated by the SAMUSO Space for Contemporary Art, Chung Chu-ha’s current photography exhibition is a wonder in its approach. Chung’s huge images deal exclusively with the issue of a nuclear power plant that has been built outside a Korean village. Neither oppressive, shocking nor alarming, as one might expect of such a theme, the tone of the images is of a suppressed threat or danger. It’s almost speculative in fact, as if the people in the scenes are unaware of the power plant’s looming presence on the horizon. The daylight present in each of the images lessens the apparent threat even more, meaning viewers have to stop and look properly into each photograph to really see the true horror of what lies on their village’s outskirts. A truly though provoking exhibition from a wonderful Korean photographer.

Location: ARTsonje Center, Anguk station, line 3, exit 1. 144-2, Sokeuk-dong, Jongro-gu, Seoul, Korea
Dates: to 27th July, 2008.
Tickets: 3,000 won.

Monster Ballet

Posted by Azmizal |

monster
Imagine a not too distant future where machines think independently and are able to recreate themselves. Much faster and more powerful than humans, what would they think of beauty? Imagine seeing the moment when machines realize that beauty exists.Monster ballet is an extraordinary union of classical choreography, music and metamorphic machines on a quest for the meaning of beauty. Kim YongGul returns from the Paris Ballet to choreograph the dancers of the National Ballet in conjunction with large scale heavy machinery and a 10 metre high robot in the most extraordinary juxtaposition of dance you will ever see.
